The female breast is one of the defining characteristics of a woman’s femininity and sexuality. Fuller, firmer breasts are adored by both men and women alike, though desired breast size and correct body proportions greatly divide opinion. Saggy, loose breasts usually occur after childbirth and breastfeeding, but can also happen to adolescents and young women before pregnancy. Saggy breasts can also cause discomfort, negative body image and loss of self-confidence, both for the woman and her partner.

Breast Anatomy

The breast is composed of mammary glands that produce milk during lactation. The breast begins to develop at the onset of adolescence and is usually fully developed by the age of 17 – 18. The breast undergoes changes in shape and size over the years, especially during pregnancy and lactation. Weight gain or loss also greatly affect breast size. Excessive breast growth, characteristic of adolescence, is called pubertal hypertrophy. This condition sometimes results in very large breasts as soon as adolescence. The cause of this phenomenon is as yet unknown, and hormone testing usually reveals no indication of the condition.

Shapes

Breasts can be either big or small, saggy or loose. The size and shape of the breasts and areolas may also be asymmetrical. Undesired phenomena can also be observed in men, and sometimes surgical intervention is also required. Men may also suffer from large, swollen breasts, a phenomenon called gynecomastia, and it presents in either one side or both. Breast surgeries give the breast a much nicer, more adequate shape and size, but they do not support the breast, nor do they prevent sagging over time.

Anesthesia

Breast lifts are performed under local or general anesthesia and take around one hour to complete.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lifts involve removing excess skin, repositioning the nipples and reshaping the breasts. If the saggy breast is also small, breast augmentation can be combined as part of the procedure, resulting in impressive shape and size that match the woman’s body and add a touch of grace and beauty (click here for more information on breast augmentations). Breast lifts are an outpatient procedure and the woman can return home a few hours after surgery.

Scarless Mastopexy

Breast lifts are very common and provide excellent results. However, the scars left on the breast after surgery often cause frustration, aggravation and dissatisfaction for both patient and surgeon. This is sometimes followed by sagging and loss of volume later on. Dr. Govrin has developed a new method, combining lightweight implants, that makes it possible to maintain firm, perky breasts for much longer. This procedure effectively prevents the scarring associated with breast lifts, while also reducing and preventing sagging and loss of volume. This method has been praised and applauded by plastic surgeons after Dr. Govrin presented it at various medical conferences around the world.

Postoperative Instructions

You may shower the day after surgery and can even wash your breasts and the adhesive strips covering the stitches. After showering, make sure to cover the adhesive strips with a pad and weat a support bra recommended by Dr. Govrin. The day after surgery, it is recommended that you use Dr. Govrin’s Triple Therapy. Dr. Govrin developed the Triple Therapy based on his extensive experience and it helps improve skin texture, makes scars heal faster, and helps maintain surgical results for longer.

Recovery

The sutures used in this procedure are dissolvable and do not need to be removed. You will be asked to come in for follow-up around two weeks after the surgery. Your breasts should not hurt, and you may resume regular activity within 2 – 3 days. The surgery leaves scars that usually become indistinct (but do not disappear) after a few months.

Side Effects

Potential side effects include: inflammation, bleeding, asymmetrical breasts or nipples and unsightly scars.

It is important to remember that breast surgeries give the breast a much nicer, more adequate shape and size, but they do not support the breast, nor do they prevent sagging over time, due to factors involving skin type and properties (which cannot be foreseen by the surgeon), as well as weight gain or weight loss, pregnancy and lactation, all of which affect breast shape and size.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Attention

1.Fever of 38 o C (100.4 o F).
2. Severe redness on or around the breast.
3. Sudden swelling of the breast.
4. Fluid discharge from surgical wound.
5. Breast suddenly hardens after softening.

Periodic Postoperative Checkups

Every woman must get a routine breast exam performed by a breast surgeon, regardless of the surgery or its type. My practice operates breast clinics where every woman who has undergone surgery gets tested using follow-up ultrasounds. The test results are filed in the medical records my clinic keeps. HMOs copay for this test. For more information and to get a referral please visit the clinic during the operating hours indicated on the website.
